Asbestos Awareness

General asbestos awareness

The aim of this training is designed to reduce the amount of harm caused to those trades’ people who may be exposed to asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) during the course of their employment.

  • Asbestos exposure standards, health effects, health surveillance and medical monitoring;
  • Common products containing Asbestos;
  • New Zealand Legislation and Regulations applicable to asbestos handling and removal;
  • Identification, assessment and control of asbestos in buildings;
  • Safe working procedures including the correct wearing, maintenance and use of PPE/RPE;
  • Decontamination procedures; and
  • Storing Labelling and disposal of Asbestos waste.

Surveying and Sampling Strategies for Asbestos in Buildings

The aim of this course is to provide background and practical knowledge in the surveying of buildings for asbestos and to provide general guidance on management procedures necessary to minimise exposure to any identified asbestos. 

It is important to note that before undertaking this course students are expected to be aware of the principles required to survey buildings for asbestos. Additionally, experience of asbestos surveying under the supervision of a competent surveyor would be beneficial. 

Upon successfully completion of this course students should:

  • Have a clear understanding of the requirements relating to safe management of asbestos in buildings
  • Be able to describe the uses of asbestos in buildings and the public health risks these might pose
  • Understand the principles of and requirements for asbestos surveys, risk assessment and risk management strategies and their role in reducing health risks
  • Have detailed knowledge of the approved methods for the sampling of ‘bulk asbestos’ along with situations where segregation might be required
  • Have a good understanding of suitable PPE & RPE to be used and the mothods for personal decontamination

IP404

Air Monitoring, Clearance Inspections and Reoccupation Following the Removal of Asbestos

The aim of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the techniques and processes involved in air sampling; an overview of asbestos removal work; the process of sig-off and reoccupation following removal works; and how to undertake this work in a safe manner.

Upon successfully completion of this course students should:

  • Be able to understand the scope of asbestos assessment work by undertaking a thorough review of the removal methodology.
  • Be able to confirm by means of on-site inspections that removal has been undertaken in line with the methodology.
  • Understand the risks/hazards associated with asbestos removal work, and to ensure that appropriate safety measures are in place – specifically in regard to cleanliness and decontamination.
  • Be able to verify that work has been completed by means of thorough visual inspections and air testing within work areas.
  • Understand the importance of communicating any findings and observations, and how to document these appropriately.
  • Have an understanding of the limitations of the method, common issues that can arise and potential conflicts of interest.
