How Much Money Should We Spend On Asbestos Testing?

In the past, asbestos was a material commonly used in buildings and various other products and items. However, nowadays, we know that asbestos fibres can cause a plethora of unfortunate health conditions and have smartly chosen to stop using the material in our buildings – and, for older buildings that may still contain the dangerous mineral, there are helpful asbestos testing services available.

But, when hiring anyone to conduct a crucial service, you should always think about how much you should spend on asbestos sample testing. By being well-informed, you can avoid testing companies that are way overpriced and companies that are suspiciously cheap.

So, how dangerous is asbestos exactly, and how much should you spend on testing for it?

How Dangerous Is Asbestos?

The vast majority of us know that asbestos is a hazardous material, but many of us do not realise just how unsafe it is. Asbestos itself is a natural silicate material that is composed of many tiny fibres. If your home contains asbestos and that asbestos is disturbed, it can release its fibres into the nearby air, which will then be inhaled and cause damage to your body.

Luckily, asbestos testing and surveying services exist that can help you determine if your home contains any of this potentially harmful material.

Asbestos itself has well-known flame-resistant properties, which is why it was popular as a building material. People would often use asbestos to fireproof materials, as well as insulate buildings. Asbestos can be found in either a firmly bound or loosely bound state in buildings.

Although, if asbestos stays undisturbed, it won’t release fibres. The problem mainly occurs when construction projects, or anything else disruptive, disturb the asbestos and causes it to break and release tiny fibres into the air. If proper asbestos testing and removal are not done, and anyone breathes in these fibres for an extended amount of time, they could suffer from the following adverse health effects:

Asbestosis. This is a condition where the lungs are damaged due to fine asbestos fibres, which can then lead to trouble breathing and scarred lungs.

Lung Cancer. Individuals who have been exposed to asbestos for an extended period may be susceptible to developing different forms of cancer, usually lung cancer.

Mesothelioma. This is a form of cancer that can develop in the lungs, diaphragm, chest and pleura.

Pleural Plaques. These are benign growths and thickened tissue in the lungs that can develop after ten to thirty years of asbestos exposure. However, many individuals who suffer from pleural plaques do not require treatment and do not experience trouble breathing.

How Much Should I Spend On Asbestos Testing?

As you can see, not surveying and testing for asbestos and breathing in the dangerous material can lead to debilitating health conditions. So, having proper asbestos surveying and testing done is absolutely essential if you suspect your home or building may contain the potentially harmful material.

But, how much should you spend?

When you go through a reliable and experienced company like us at Fibresafe, you will need to pay $60 (Excluding GST) for each bulk sample that you send into the laboratory. To get the process started, all you need to do is download and fill out our Chain of Custody Form, clearly mark and double bag your samples, and then send them to our lab for testing at Level 1 16 Armidale Street, Petone, Lower Hutt, Wellington.

If your sample is urgent, it will cost $100 (ex GST) per bulk sample. Additionally, if you are uncomfortable trying to take a sample yourself, you can pay $165 (Ex GST) for an experienced asbestos surveyor to visit your home or building to retrieve a sample for you.

In addition, if you are unsure of what parts of your home may contain asbestos, you can have a survey conducted before taking a sample for asbestos testing. During a survey, qualified surveyors will visit your building and examine your structure for any signs of asbestos. These professionals will know everything they need to know about what kinds of materials may contain asbestos, and they will help you determine whether or not your home has the substance.
