Air monitoring is conducted to measure the level of airborne fibres. Air samples are taken using asbestos air sampling pumps accredited to ISO 13137:2013. The pumps are calibrated before and after each sample taken. 

There are two methods of air monitoring that can be conducted, static sampling and personal sampling. Static sampling is when a pump will be placed in an area to suck air in at a specified rate. Personal sampling is generally for asbestos removal workers to monitor their exposure levels during asbestos removal work. This helps them assess whether their control measures and their levels of PPE are suited for the job. 

There are also different reasons for asbestos air monitoring to be carried out, whether you are removing asbestos, or just looking for some peace of mind. Whatever the purpose, the pumps and method are designed to simulate a person breathing over a time weighted average.  

For A Class asbestos removal, air monitoring is part of the third stage of the asbestos removal clearance procedure. It is mandatory in order for a removal area to be deemed fit for reoccupation. 

 

Types of Air Monitoring

The reason for the air monitoring being carried out determines how we conduct the sampling.

Clearance Sampling

Clearance sampling is carried out after removal of asbestos work. It determines whether the removal area is fit for reoccupation. Those who require clearance air sampling are usually asbestos removal companies. however, if you’ve removed asbestos in your own home we recommend some clearance sampling to ensure your home is safe for you to reoccupy. 

Control Monitoring

Control monitoring is usually carried out before or during asbestos removal work. It’s a blanket term for air tests done to ensure control measures stated within the Asbestos Removal Control Plan are effective. The following tests are types of control monitoring:

Background

Before asbestos removal work begins it’s a good idea to assess what is around the premises that might draw in high fibre counts. Factors around the removal area outside of the enclosure can interfere with results of leak & clearance monitoring. If you are conducting work  where neighbouring areas or buildings have asbestos, it is a good idea to opt for background air monitoring. 

Leak

Before asbestos removal starts the enclosure should be smoke tested to spot any holes that may be present. Leak monitoring is basically for the same thing. The pumps are placed in areas of weakness where fibres might escape. Common areas are the decontamination unit, baglocks & airlocks or around the negative pressure unit. It is always a good idea to tell the assessor conducting leak air monitoring of any areas that have been a problem for you during your smoke test. 

Reassurance

Reassurance air monitoring is for checking control measures are working for your asbestos waste or transit routes. It is also done after work to ensure areas surrounding the asbestos removal area are unaffected by the work. It’s a great option for B Class removal work, and adds that higher level of reassurance that a job has been completed safely.
